16-year-old Scratches Neighbor's Car With Bike, Mom Gets Annoyed When He Won't Participate in Her Filmed Apology

Do we always have to make an example of those who have done something wrong?

There is an argument to be made that parenting in the modern day is more difficult than it has ever been before. It seems like everybody has something slightly different to say about the best way to raise kids, and social media has opened up a whole new world of judgment and paranoia for parents to drive themselves crazy over. Most would probably agree that they want to raise their children to be decent people, but there is a lot of conflicting advice on how to do that.

Unfortunately, there are parents out there for whom the public perception of their parenting is more important than the impact it may have on their kids. They want to promote a certain image of themselves and their children that looks good not just to the people they know, but also to the internet at large. Their priorities are not in the right place for being a good influence, but they are sharply focused on what works for engagement. The only thing is that not everybody, child or not, is going to be willing to play along with their charade.

  • In this story, a teenage girl accidentally scratched her neighbor's car with her bike. He accepted her apology for the damage, which turned out to be minor and easily fixed. 

    He saw that as the end of the issue, but when the girl's mom claimed that her daughter wanted to deliver him a cake, he gladly accepted. Things soon changed when the pair arrived at his front door, with the teenager looking uncomfortable, and the mom filming them both with her phone.

    The neighbor declined to participate in the interaction when he realized that the mom wanted to make an example of her daughter in this way. She wasn't happy, leaving him wondering if he was the unreasonable one.

    A week ago a neighbor (16) unintentionally scratched my car with her bike. She immediately stopped, started crying and called her mother for assistance. Scratch appeared worse than it actually was and in store, it was simply polished away for a samll amount. Since it was an accident and a very minor one, I didn't charge the girl or her mom.

But I don't like how a simple apology was transformed into a scene, girl seemed really uncomfortable, I was filmed without my permission and I might have looked after it was published as someone who demands apologies from kids.
